EUscreen takes the privacy of its users very serious and will process and use information about you in a secure manner. In this document the privacy statement of EUscreen is explained. We advise you to thoroughly read this Privacy Statement. In the event that words that are written in capitals are not defined in this Privacy Statement, they are defined in the terms of use of EUscreen.
1. Who is EUscreen?
EUscreen is a Best Practice Network funded within the eContentplus programme of the European Commission and started as a three-year project in October 2009. The project consortium is made up of 28 partners and 9 associate partners from 20 European countries. EUscreen is legally represented by the University of Utrecht. EUscreen provides standardised access to over 30,000 items of programme content and complementary contextual information through one freely accessible online portal The manner in which your personal data will be processed and used has been registered with the Dutch Data Protection Authority.
2. Which information is collected and processed by EUscreen?
Account Information
If you wish to optimally use the Website, you must first create an account. During the process of creating your account, you will be asked to submit certain information about yourself. Some of this requested information is optional. You can always amend the information you have submitted in your account.
Automatically Generated Information
EUscreen collects Automatically Generated Information. This information consists of your surfing behaviour on the Website, such as the web pages you visit, how long you stay on a certain webpage and the use you make of your Profile. Furthermore, EUscreen also collects your IP-address, the browser type (computer program necessary to view web pages) as well as “cookies”.
3. What are cookies and how does EUscreen use them?
In offering the Website, EUscreen uses cookies that are stored by your browser on your computer. Cookies are small bits of information which the server of EUscreen sends to your browser with the intention that this information will be send back to the server of EUscreen on your next visit. By using a cookie our Website can recognize you if you visit our Website again and allows us to amend the Website to your needs. A cookie therefore helps you save time. A cookie can not spread viruses.
You can adjust your browser so that you do not receive any cookies during your next use of the Website. However, in that case you may not have access to (parts of) the Website. In order to know more about the functionality of cookies, please consult your browser instruction or the Help function in your browser.
If you do make use of cookies, EUscreen advises you to log off if you use a public computer and to keep your user name and password confidential.
4. For which purposes will EUscreen use collected information?
Purposes
EUscreen will use the personal data it has collected about you for the following purposes:
- to offer the Website to you;
- to send you information regarding the Website;
- to send you information on EUscreen’s own, similar services;
- to promote the Website;
- to draw up statistical data rendered anonymous and to protect the Website;
- to provide your information to third parties pursuant to legal obligations and/or in case of a law suit or the protection of its rights.
Use by EUscreen
EUscreen offers a Website which enables users to browse through decades of digitised television and film content made available by 18 European audiovisual archives. The Website offers free access to videos, stills, texts and rich metadata, covering major events in Europe (and beyond) as well as providing insights into how people in Europe have lived for over the last sixty years. You can look for clips and programmes by entering text, clicking on relevant search fields or by using the filters to refine what you are looking for. It is also possible to post messages yourself. In order to ensure that you can optimally use the Website, EUscreen must process your personal data.
EUscreen also wishes to keep you informed of the development of its Website. In case of an upgrade, update or any other change to the Website, EUscreen will let you know. It is not possible to opt out for these messages.
Furthermore, EUscreen can send you a news letter that will keep you informed of the promotions EUscreen organises. You will receive the newsletter on a regular basis. If you no longer wish to receive the newsletter, you can unsubscribe by sending an email to euscreen@beeldengeluid.nl. A possibility to unsubscribe is also included in every individual newsletter. In case you unsubscribe, EUscreen advises you to regularly check the Website for new promotions.
Use by third parties
Without your explicit consent, EUscreen will not provide third parties with your personal data for direct marketing purposes (inter alia for sending advertisements).
EUscreen can provide third parties with your personal data in so far as necessary for offering the Website and/or in the event it concerns data that can not be traced back to you personally (such as the Automatically Generated Information excluding the IP-address) and are therefore not to be considered personal data.
Finally, EUscreen can provide your details to third parties if EUscreen is obliged to do so pursuant to legal provisions, it is forced to do so as a result of a legal case and/or in the event EUscreen regards it necessary for the protection of its own rights.
The terms of use state the manner in which EUscreen handles claims stating that certain Content and/or Contributions infringe third party (intellectual property) rights (notice-and-takedown). EUscreen may in such cases provide certain personal data (such as name and email address) of the person that issued the claim to the user that has uploaded the allegedly infringing Content/Contribution. EUscreen furthermore reserves the right to provide certain personal data (such as name and email address) of the user that has uploaded the allegedly infringing Content/Contribution to the person that has issued the claim and/or to third parties in so far as deemed necessary by EUscreen.
Google Analytics
The Website uses Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google Inc. (“Google”). Google Analytics uses “cookies”, which are text files placed on your computer as described in paragraph 3, to help the website analyze how you use the site. The information generated by the cookies about your use of the Website (including your IP address) will be transmitted to and stored by Google on servers in the United States. Google will use this information for the purpose of evaluating your use of the Website, compiling reports on Website activity for Website operators and providing other services relating to Website activity and internet usage. Google may also transfer this information to third parties where required to do so by law, or where such third parties process the information on Google’s behalf. Google will not associate your IP address with any other data held by Google. You may refuse the use of cookies by selecting the appropriate settings on your browser, however please note that if you do this you may not be able to use the full functionality of the Website. By using the Website, you consent to the processing of data about you by Google in the manner and for the purposes set out above.
5. Transfer of company
In the event of a further growth and development of EUscreen one or more parts of the assets of the company may be transferred to a third party or EUscreen may merge with a third party. In that case your personal data will also be transferred.
6. Transfer to countries outside the EU
Given the fact that EUscreen uses Google Analytics, as described above in paragraph 4, EUscreen transfers personal data to the United Stated of America. As a part of Google Inc., Google Analytics is a party to the Safe Harbor program. This means that Google has taken suitable measures to protect your personal data. Based on this, EUscreen is entitled to transfer your personal data to Google for the purposes as described in paragraph 4.
7. Inspection and correction of personal data
You can always inspect and, if necessary, amend your personal data in your Profile. If you wish to receive an overview of all personal data about you stored by EUscreen, you can send EUscreen a request for inspection. EUscreen shall send you the overview of stored personal data within four (4) weeks. Subsequently you can ask EUscreen to correct, supplement, delete or protect the collected personal data. EUscreen will inform you within four (4) weeks whether it will honour your request to correct supplement, delete or protect your personal data. The abovementioned requests can be send to euscreen@beeldengeluid.nl.
8. What is the scope of EUscreen’s responsibilities?
The Website may contain hyperlinks that, if clicked, will navigate you to websites of third parties. EUscreen has no control over these websites of third parties. It is possible that a different privacy policy applies to the use of these websites. This Privacy Statement only applies to personal data obtained by means of the Website. EUscreen accepts no responsibility or liability for the (operation or contents of) third party websites.
9. Can this Privacy Statement be changed?
This Privacy Statement can be changed. You will be informed of changes by means of the Website.
